Agreeing with God’s Purpose

God’s will for our lives reveals the reason for our existence. As we study the Word of God, we can discover some of our passions and spiritual gifts. But when we feel we don’t know God’s specific direction, we can get so focused on what we don’t know that we miss the very things that produce His purpose in us.

“But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11).

Did you know that righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness can lead you to agree with God’s purpose for your life? If you flee the things of the world and pursue, chase down, and follow these things of God, you will find yourself agreeing with what the Word says about you.

Righteousness speaks of your new identity in Jesus Christ, free from guilt and condemnation. Follow after things that speak of righteousness and avoid things that produce guilt.

Godliness is another thing that gives direction. Stay with pure activities and pursuits. “Sow to the Spirit” (Galatians 6:8) in your everyday behavior, and you will starve your flesh. “Walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16), and you will not fulfill carnal desires.

Follow things that encourage your faith. Faith comes from hearing God (Romans 10:17). If you are inspired to do something for the Lord, it is probably because you have heard God, even though you might not even know when you heard Him. Follow your faith.

Let love guide you. God is love, and His love is the life and power of redemption. Let His love in you be a restorative and healing influence in others’ lives. As you love others, His light will reveal more to you, and your path will be clear. Always guard your heart from strife, contention, and conflict.

Rest in His patience. Patience is a mighty defense against foolish decisions. Stay focused and true to the Word, knowing that it is by faith and patience that we inherit the promises (Hebrews 6:12).

Continually choose gentleness. Let His peace in you speak peace to the fear of others. You can be kind, gentle, and humble regardless of circumstances.

“And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people’” (2 Corinthians 6:16).

You are God’s temple. The Spirit dwells in you. He is your God, and you are His. You really don’t need an overwhelming, powerful vision to know God’s will. If your life agrees with righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness, you are abiding in Jesus. You are living God’s purpose. You have discovered the reason for your existence. Out of you will flow His living water. You will love and bless others as He has loved and blessed you.
