He is the God Who Sees You

Did you know that there are single mothers in the Bible? One is Hagar, who went through desertion, loneliness, brokenness, and fear—the same kind of things that single mothers go through today.

If you have been left alone with a child, Hagar is the single mom in the Bible you might be able to relate to. You know the story of Abraham and Hagar. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, had not been able to give Abraham a child. Many people feel sorry for Sarah and resent Hagar because she slept with Abraham and had his child. But just consider what was done to Hagar.

Hagar was a slave. Sarah forced her to sleep with Abraham, and then when Hagar got pregnant, Sarah hated her for the child she gave Abraham. To make matters worse, Abraham sent Hagar and her child, Ishmael, away because he was not the child God had promised.

So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba” (Genesis 21:1).

You, like Hagar, may have been cast into the wilderness with your child and left to your own resources. Hagar was grief-stricken, knowing her bread and water for her boy would soon be gone.

But when all seemed lost, God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar:

“What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation” (Genesis 21:17-18).

God opened Hagar’s eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink because she heard God’s promise of life for her child (Genesis 21:19-20).

In the moments when you feel alone, you have a choice. You can sit there in your desert and die, or you can choose to see beyond your pain and recognize the hope God extends. God is always with you, offering you hope. Your pain and fear can blind you to the fact that God has good plans for you and your child. It is hard to feel God’s presence in your pain, but He is with you in your desert, just like He was with Hagar in hers. If God can open Hagar’s eyes to see the supply of water she had not previously seen, He can open yours to what He has prepared for you.

Perhaps your resources are limited, and you can’t see beyond your needs. But the truth is that no matter your situation, God is with you, providing a way out. Never get so caught up in the hardships of life that you believe you will die of thirst. God has a well of living water to offer you. But you will miss it if you are so caught up in your pain.

Reach beyond your pain. There is an overflowing well of God’s unending supply of love for you. His name is Jesus. Open your eyes to His promise of life and hear Him offering you hope. Drink His water, and let Him fill you. You are not alone, and you will never be alone. God has heard your cry in the desert. He is the God who sees you.
