Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge skillfully and with sound judgment to navigate life's challenges. It provides insight and discernment regarding which actions to take, recognizing the principles that lead to life, bear good fruit, and improve people's circumstances.
Wisdom encompasses more than just knowledge or understanding. Knowledge gathers facts and truths. Understanding organizes these facts and truths. Wisdom skillfully applies those facts and truths. When we comprehend what knowledge teaches, we arrange it in ways that allow us to access it. Wisdom utilizes our understanding of facts and truths, enabling us to apply the appropriate principles of truth to people and situations.
There is a wisdom of this world that produces nothing good (1 Corinthians 2:6), but godly wisdom comes from God as a gift. It comes through His Word. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6).
“If any of you lacks wisdom,” James wrote, “let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:5-8).
When you seek God’s wisdom, He grants it freely. If you ask in faith and believe, you will receive it. However, if you doubt, you become indecisive and cannot perceive what you have requested. Without God’s wisdom, you will lack the ability to know which principles to apply and what actions to take in difficult situations that can yield positive results and improve people’s lives.
Solomon recognized the importance of wisdom after ascending to the throne of Israel. He prayed to God for this gift to help him govern effectively.
“Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of yours” (2 Chronicles 7:10, NKJV)?
The principles of God’s truth are essential in our lives, but they hold little power without God’s wisdom to apply them. When we prioritize God’s wisdom over worldly pursuits, not only will we discover it, but other blessings will also be added to our lives.
“Do not forsake her,” Solomon declared about wisdom, “and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her” (Proverbs 4:6-8).
Wisdom is the most essential quality for success. Therefore, a lack of success and honor indicates a deficiency in wisdom. Embracing wisdom leads to promotion and respect. However, it is crucial to understand that wisdom must be actively pursued. This requires a deep desire for and love of wisdom. If you embrace God’s wisdom, it will guard and protect you, providing you with understanding and bringing you honor. God’s wisdom will keep you in His grace and fill you with His discernible presence.
There are still revelations to uncover, ideas to explore, and solutions to tough challenges waiting to be discovered. Lives and relationships need healing. God’s Word awaits your acknowledgment, understanding, and application of its wisdom. But you must ask, believing you will receive it, and embrace it.
“Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly” (Proverbs 3:18).
God’s wisdom is the essential value needed to experience a spiritually fulfilling life. Those who embrace God’s wisdom recognize this truth. Know the Word. Seek the Holy Spirit’s revelation of God’s truth. Ask for God’s wisdom to apply the right principle of truth to the right situation at the right time.
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, grant you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him, so that your understanding may be enlightened (Ephesians 1:17-18). May you humbly receive God’s wisdom and revelation, applying it in your own life, so that when the Holy Spirit directs, you may speak into the lives of others the wisdom you have received with grace.
“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook” (Proverbs 18:4).
God is your never-ending source, and the words of wisdom flowing from the depth of His grace, when spoken, produce good fruit and improve the lives of those who receive them.
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Proverbs 25:11).
