His Peace of Mind and Heart

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

—John 14:27 (NLT)

Don’t ever despair. Don’t be troubled or afraid. Jesus has left you a gift—peace of mind and heart. No, your circumstances will never be perfect. This world will never give you peace. But you know that already. You have tried to make things right and failed. You have tried to make yourself perfect and realized the impossibility of that work. You have strived and struggled until fear has claimed your heart and mind. Jesus waits for you to come to Him and give your circumstances—your despair—your fears to Him.

You can’t change what has happened—just like you can never transform your heart. Only Jesus can. He loves you with His everlasting love. He has drawn you in loving kindness. He has good plans for your life. You will find them when you search for them with your whole heart. They are plans that don’t disappoint but give hope. God’s hope never leads to disappointment because His love for you is constant and unchanging. It is greater than your heart. The world loves you only when you please it. He loves you in your pain—in your fear—in your misery—in your sin and imperfection. He makes right what you don’t have the power to make right. Fear is never your answer. Escape is never your answer. Believing in Jesus Christ and what He promises is your answer.

Without hope, faith has no life. Faith gives substance to what you hope for, and faith is the evidence of what you can’t see. Don’t despair. Don’t be troubled and afraid. Don’t give up. Learn the truths in the Word of your identity in Jesus Christ. You can begin in Ephesians 1:3-14. Learn of your right standing with God in Him. Study and meditate in these verses on what His death and resurrection on your behalf have given you. Ask yourself if you really believe the truths of your new birth in Jesus. Your Father has supplied everything you ever need in this life. His arms are always open. He wants to bless you with all His spiritual blessings. He loves you. He has given you peace of mind and heart. You can draw upon His peace of mind and heart when you believe it is yours.

It is so unfortunate to have right standing and peace with God and not believe it in your heart. You miss the benefits of His redemption. Open your mind to be renewed by His truth, and your heart to believe what is yours in Jesus. His righteousness is yours. Jesus has given you peace with God. His peace surpasses your human understanding and guards your heart and mind.

“I do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come” (Ephesians 1:16-21).

There is nothing greater to change your life than the revelation of God’s love in the gift of His Son. Your troubled mind can trust in your loving God who has come to live in your heart by grace through faith in Jesus. You cannot convince yourself of God’s peace of mind and heart. You believed by faith for your salvation. You believe by faith in the benefits of your salvation.

Having a revelation by the Holy Spirit about your new life in Jesus and believing that revelation in your heart convinces you that you have His peace of mind of heart. You can give your fear to God, and draw upon His peace. You can choose His peace over fear and joy over despair.  When your spiritual understanding is enlightened by the Holy Spirit, you experience Him keeping you, comforting you, and guarding your mind. When you trust God and keep your mind on His truths, you defeat your fears with the same power with which Jesus overcame the grave. The resurrection power of God guards your mind and heart in His perfect peace.
