Walking by Faith

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

—2 Corinthians 5:7

The spiritual world is more real than the physical world. The spiritual world created the physical world, and without any doubt, the spiritual world is greater than the physical world it created. Faith is simply seeing through the eyes of our hearts into the spiritual world and basing our thoughts and actions on those spiritual realities instead of being limited to what we perceive physically.

Faith does not deny physical realities. It just denies that the physical world is all that exists and that spiritual reality overcomes the physical when confidently believed and acted upon.

The Christian life is controlled by faith—not by what our physical eyes see. Sight is, in a sense, part of it, but it is spiritual sight rather than physical sight. Hebrews 11:27 says that Moses “by faith forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” Moses’ faith allowed him to continue despite hardship because he could see, envision, and comprehend the invisible God, who could not be seen (John 1:18).

Faith responds positively to God’s promises. It sees and understands with the heart (Matthew 13:15). In Ephesians 1:18, Paul prayed that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened” (NIV). A promise in God’s Word must be seen, heard, understood, and believed in the heart (Matthew 13:15, 13:23, Romans 10:8, 10:10) so that it may be acted upon and bear fruit (Matthew 13:23, James 2:17-18). Abraham was strong in faith because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, He was able also to perform (Romans 4:20-21). You are convinced something is true when you “hear” it in your heart (Romans 10:17).

The object of genuine faith is God Himself. Like a seed, faith must be planted, watered, and nurtured (Matthew 13:18-23). You must believe in God’s promise and the powerful God who stands behind that promise. Faith is walking in the certainty and assurance of the reality of what is believed (Hebrews 11:1).

Why is this so difficult? Most of us are more dominated by our physical sight than our faith. That is our basic problem. When we renew ourselves to the point where faith is our sight and we agree with the Word in our hearts, we will experience God’s promises.

Father, I thank You for revealing Your Word to me. I understand that all things are possible to those who believe. Like Abraham and others who have seen You do the impossible in their lives, I believe that I will see Your promise come to pass. You will always do exactly what You have promised to do. Set my faith on fire to believe, and help me stand firm, stable, and unwavering. Help me stay focused until I receive the promise. What you have revealed in your Word to me is not a question of if it will happen but only a question of when. Until then, I will remain spiritually strong and secure, not doubting your Word and walking by faith. The spiritual reality of your promise will be the physical reality of my life.

In Your Name, Jesus, Amen.
