A True Revelation of God’s Love

Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

—Isaiah 41:10

If we were on our own in this world, we would have good reason to fear. But we who have God with us have good reason not to fear. He has promised to strengthen, help, and uphold us with His righteous right hand. A raised “right hand” signifies power and ability. The Lord will use all His power and ability to uphold us.

In Isaiah 41:10, we are told not to fear and not to be dismayed.

After Moses’ death, the Lord told Jacob that it was time to cross the Jordan and take the land that He had promised the children of Israel. They were afraid of what lay ahead.

“Have I not commanded you?” the Lord spoke to him. “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Joshua could expect God’s protection since he was acting under His command. He was told to do two things—to be strong and of good courage, and he was told not to do two things—to be afraid or dismayed.

Joshua was strong and courageous because God was with him wherever he went. The same is true of us. The Lord will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:15), so we have no reason to be afraid. We, too, can be strong and courageous.

“There is no fear in love,” John writes, “but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).

The Greek word that was translated as “no” in this verse is “ou me” and means “never, certainly not, not at all, by no means” (Greek Lexicon). This means there is never any fear, certainly not any fear, and by no means any fear in God’s kind of God. If we are undergoing fear, we are not experiencing God’s love perfectly or entirely. God’s perfect, unconditional love removes all fear.

Years ago, I struggled with a tormenting and debilitating fear. I had never regarded fear as an issue until, one day after anxiety had finally claimed all my thoughts, fear claimed my heart. The only thing I had to come against my fear was being told in the Word that God would never, certainly not, and by no means ever give me a spirit of fear. God had given me His power, love, and sound mind. The power to cast out fear was His perfect love for me.

Over the next few months, instead of allowing my fear to torment all my thoughts, I allowed the Holy Spirit to renew my mind with God’s Word. I prayed for a spirit of revelation in the wisdom and knowledge of God’s love. And God began to show me His love. I kept putting the truth about His love in my heart until His revelation was so deep it couldn’t be destroyed by anyone or anything. His perfect love threw fear out of me. There just wasn’t any room for it.

Have you known and believed God’s love for you? He is love, and the one who abides in His love abides in Him. God’s love has been perfected for you in Jesus. No matter what comes against you, as Jesus is, so are you in this world. There is no reason for you to fear. HIs perfect love in you leaves no room for fear (1 John 4:16-18).

Be strong in the Lord and have courage. A true revelation of God’s presence and love for you will always cast out fear.
