But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
—John 10:2-3
You belong to Jesus. You are reborn of His Spirit. You are one of His sheep. When you hear His voice, you know that it is your Master calling you.
John 10:3 promises that all who are one of God’s sheep can hear His voice. Many born-again Christians doubt this promise because they have not experienced it. However, the Word of God is true, not our human experience.
Although God sometimes speaks audibly, very few believers experience this. He speaks to our inner person—our spirit—where we have been born again by the Holy Spirit. Our inner person hears Him. When we are not sensitive to the Holy Spirit and controlled by our born-again inner man, we are led by our flesh. The Word calls this walking in the flesh instead of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-18).
God created man in His own likeness. He is three in one. We are three in one. We have a spirit, a soul, and a body (I Thessalonians 5:23). What is born of flesh is of flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit (John 3:6). We have been recreated by the Holy Spirit and born as new creations in our spirits. Our spirits are reborn as perfectly complete as they will ever be. If we change our thinking so that we believe what God says in His Word about who we are and what we have as a new creation in Christ, then the agreement between our spirit and soul becomes a majority, and we will experience the life of God we have received in our born-again spirits.
We need to hear the voice of our Shepherd, who is always attempting to communicate with us, and stop listening to the voice of the world. The problem is not God’s. It is ours. We are not hearing God because our minds are focused elsewhere. We are distracted. We are hearing the news, our issues, our worries, and our fears instead of the voice of our Shepherd who is always speaking peace to our hearts.
Bible study, meditation, prayer, and fasting all focus our minds on the things of the Spirit instead of the things of the flesh. If we fail to renew our minds, we can live our whole lives on this earth and not experience the abundant life Jesus provided us.
Your heart receives the revelation of who you are in Jesus Christ. Your heart is where you hear God speaking in His Word. It is where faith comes, and the truth of who you are in your born-again spirit becomes your experience.
Do you want to know this new person you have become? Listen, and you will hear the voice of your Shepherd speaking to you through His Word.
