Lord, if I have wounded or made someone stumble, forgive me. If
I have said words without thinking that have broken a heart, I can't bear it. My
heart breaks for the person I have injured, and breaks because I have failed
you. Lord, if I have turned away from someone's cry for help because I might
suffer too, then I have failed you once more. If I have been cold and unfeeling
to someone's need, break my heart so I might understand what I have done. If I
have run from my responsibility to someone, and longed to be hidden from its
requirement, then, again, I ask forgiveness. Lord, forgive me if I have wounded
another person's heart.
“If we confess our
sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “Have mercy on me, O God,” David cried,
“according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out
my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin” (Psalm
51:1-2). If I confess, Lord, you are faithful to forgive, and cleanse my heart.
Your love is unfailing, and I will know and experience forgiveness once again.
My heart will be pliant in your hands. If I fail you in anyway, my heart will
ache painfully with its failure. I will feel and know your pain as if it is my
own.
“Create in me a pure
heart, O God,” David cried, “and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm
51:10). Renew your spirit within me, Lord, and I will be set free from my
failure. Keep me soft and pliable on your altar so your steadfast spirit is
secured within me. Guide me, and keep me safe from my own ability to fail you. I
place my life in your hands today, and trust you will do whatever is necessary
to create a pure heart in me.
